Copywriting FAQs
How much do you charge for copywriting?
As every project is different I don’t have a copywriting rate card. I quote on a project-by-project basis. My hourly rate is £60.
Do you offer any discounts for copywriting?
Yes, I offer a percentage discount to local charities, not-for-profit organisations and small independent businesses.
How do I get a quote for a copywriting project?
You can either call me to discuss your project, or email me a project outline that tells me:
- What you need written (if it’s a website send me the site map if you have one)
- How long you think it needs to be
- What you need it to achieve
- What your deadlines are
- Who your target audience is.
I’ll call you to discuss your project and get back to you with a proposal and quote, usually within 48 hours. Less if it’s a small project.
How do I get a quote for an editing project?
You can either call me to discuss your project, or email me a sample of what you need edited. I’ll also need to know:
- How long the document is
- What you need it to achieve
- What your deadlines are
- Who your target audience is.
I’ll call you to discuss your project and get back to you with a proposal and quote, usually within 48 hours. Less if it’s a small project. I can’t give you a quote for editing without some kind of sample though, so please send this through. (I’m happy to sign an non-disclosure agreement beforehand.)
What does the price you quote me include and exclude?
For most projects that I do, fees are fixed, so you know the full price for the project up front.
This price will include:
- An initial briefing meeting or workshop (if one is necessary)
- A first draft and two rounds of revisions.
This fee does not include out-of-pocket travel expenses for travel beyond Brighton & Hove (including 20-mile radius) or London (Zone 1-6) after that initial meeting.
Any extra work on the project, resulting from a change in the agreed project brief, may incur an additional charge. This will be made on an hourly rate, agreed at the start of the project.
I’m happy with your quote, what needs to happen to start the project?
You’ll need to email me to confirm that you are happy with the proposal and want to start the project.
I’ll need any of the following, if you have them:
- Your organisation’s brand and style guidelines
- A list of your competitors
- Any relevant user or market research
- User journeys or personas (for digital projects)
- Keyword research (for search engine optimisation)
- Any existing content or marketing materials you have.
How will you supply my copywriting?
I usually supply it as Word or Google Doc files. For larger digital projects I may suggest we use GatherContent. This online content tool makes it easier to manage workflows and import the final content into your website
If you have any other requirements, let me know. I’ve worked with various content management systems and technical writing tools.
Do I need to give you drafts of my content?
No. If you have drafts, that’s useful. But I don’t need them. I can gather the information I need by talking to you and other experts in your business, doing research, and using any other writing you already have.
What is your turnaround time for copywriting projects?
It depends on what you need and what else I’m working on at the time. If you have a tight schedule it’s best if you book the work in advance. Then I can keep the days you need free. You’ll need to pay a deposit to hold those days for your project. My weeks are usually quite busy, so if you can, get in touch at least a week in advance to book work.
I can usually complete small projects booked in advance within 24 hours.
Can you do same-day projects?
Unless you’ve booked the work in advance I’m afraid I can’t turn it around on the same day. If it’s small I can usually get it done within 48 hours.
Can you work for me at my offices?
If you’re in Sussex or London then I may be able to work at your office, depending on how many days a week you need me.
How long will it take to complete my copywriting project?
Unfortunately I honestly can’t tell you before I have the details of your project. However, as soon as I do have them I will be able to give you an estimated completion date.
Please bear in mind that any writing project requires some to-ing and fro-ing between the writer and the client. So your available time will also be a key factor in working out the final delivery date.
What can you write about?
Given a little time for research I can write about anything. There are certain areas of which I have a degree of pre-existing knowledge from personal interest or previous jobs. A brief version of this varied list includes:
- Public health
- The higher education sector in the UK
- The regulation of the health professions
- Sports and remedial massage
- Gardening and landscaping
- Web design and development
- Software development
- Teaching English as a foreign language
- Knitting, crochet and other crafts
- Food – growing, cooking and baking
Is there anything else important that I need to know?
Yes! Please read the terms and conditions. They contain all other important information as well as that seldom-read small print.
